Garage, Side Yard, or Curb: Where Should You Actually Keep Your Garbage Can?

Every Cincinnati household settles this argument eventually. Somebody wants the garbage can in the garage where it is easy to reach. Somebody else wants it out of sight on the side of the house. And somebody just leaves it near the curb because that is where it ends up every week anyway.

We have been cleaning garbage cans since 2018, over 110,000 of them across 284 neighborhoods, so we have seen every version of this setup. Here is the honest rundown on all three spots, including the part most people never think about.

The garage: convenient, protected, and you share the air

The garage is the comfort pick. The can stays out of the rain and snow, nothing blows it down the street in a storm, and taking out the garbage in January does not require a coat.

The catch is that a garage is a closed room, and a dirty garbage can does not keep its problems to itself. The residue in the bottom of a neglected can is a living film, and mold is part of it. Experts at the EPA put it plainly: “The spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air.” In a garage with the door down most of the day, that air has nowhere to go, and if the garage is attached to the house, there is a door you walk through every day. We wrote a whole post on what you are actually breathing in the garage when your garbage cans are dirty, and the short version is this: a garage can is a fine idea only if the can is actually clean.

The side yard: out of sight, out in the weather

The side yard is the compromise pick. The smell stays outside, where fresh air dilutes it, and guests never see the can.

But outside has its own costs. In summer, direct sun turns the can into an oven, and heat is exactly what the bacteria and the fly eggs inside were waiting for. In autumn, damp leaves and cooler nights keep the inside of the can wet longer, which is why so many cans smell worse in the fall than they did in July. And on garbage day you are hauling it farther, through a gate, sometimes through snow. The side yard does not fix a dirty can. It just moves the problem somewhere you visit less often, so it gets worse before anyone notices.

The curb: easy on garbage day, rough the other six days

Keeping the can near the curb or the end of the driveway makes garbage day effortless. It also means the can sits in full view and full sun all week.

Two things to know before you pick this one. First, many homeowners associations and some communities have rules about garbage cans being visible from the street, so it is worth checking yours before the letter shows up. In neighborhoods around Mason, where HOAs are common, plenty of our customers keep the can tucked away precisely for that reason. Second, a can at the curb is the easiest target on the block for raccoons and neighborhood dogs, and an open, tipped can in the sun is how a smell becomes an infestation.

The part nobody wants to hear: the can is the problem, not the spot

Here is the truth under all three options. Moving a dirty garbage can does not fix it. The film in the bottom rides along to whatever corner you pick, and it keeps growing there. The garage version of the problem is air you breathe. The side yard version is a smell that ambushes you every time you open the lid. The curb version is a wildlife buffet. Same can, same cause, three different symptoms.

And waiting for cold weather to handle it does not work either. We covered that one too: winter does not kill the germs in your garbage can. It just slows them down until spring.

Keep it wherever you want. Just keep it clean.

A clean can works in any spot. It can live in the garage without seeding the air, sit on the side of the house without announcing itself, or stand by the curb without inviting the raccoons.

That is the part we handle. Our truck comes out on your garbage day, after the hauler has emptied the can, and cleans it with a 200 degree water jet, then an eco friendly sanitizer and a shot of fresh scent. No harsh chemicals, and you do not even need to be home. The thing customers tell us most often is that they can finally keep the can in the garage again. With a 5.0 star rating from more than 500 Google reviews, we are confident enough to put a money back promise behind it.

Pick the spot that fits your house. We will make sure the can deserves to be there. See the cleaning plans or order your first cleaning online in about two minutes.
